PSA: Cleansing your Brushes

How many of you are using dirty brushes for your makeup application right now? It doesn't have to be that way though. Dirty brushes can cause much larger problems than just changing the tones of your eyeshadows! bacteria can also very easily accumulate on your brushes and cause skin issues such as breakouts. Ideally brushes should be washed with a mild cleanser once a week, and all that you truly need is warm (not hot water) and baby shampoo or another brush cleaner. Other shampoos can be used in a pinch but they may dry out the bristles over time.

To begin you will want to grasp the brushes by the handle and while holding the bristles downward so as not to allow water into the base of the bristles. Either dip into the water or hold under running water until the bristles are drenched. Pour a small (dime size) amount of the baby shampoo into the palm of your other hand and begin to swirl the brushes into it. The change in color will probably be a bit nasty, bits of foundation and blush mixed with random eyeshadow. Stunning. ;) Rub gently onto your palm for a minute or so and then gently rinse, rub into palm without shampoo, rinse and once again rub. Likely there will be no more color coming out of the brushes at this point. If though your are extra dirty you can continue the process or simply rub them into a small bit more shampoo and allow to lay on their sides and "soak" on the side of your sink.

Once fully cleansed and rinses you will want to smack the bristles onto the side of your palm to fling off the remaining water, reshape the bristles and lay onto a clean, dry towel for up to 12 hours to finish drying. They should feel like new again! You may notice the shedding of a few bristles while washing but this is completely normal for many brushes. Bare Escentuals brushes ($20-30) tend to shed much more than other higher quality brushes such as Everyday Minerals($5-10). If any of your brushes have bristles looking a bit poofy or bent you can try dipping them into boiling water for up to 30 seconds. This trick has renewed many brushes!

Good luck!

Nails of the Day

Today felt like a lazy beauty day. The works; clay mask, eyebrow threading (at home even!) and nails. I've been seriously lazy on all of these front lately and my skin is a bit angry at the moment. Likely because I also haven't been in a makeup brush washing kick within the last 2 weeks either. Ick! LOL

A friend gave me a Sally Hansen French manicure kit that I had wanted to try, so I gave it a whirl on my toesies. 15 minutes later and voila, a cute and sophisticated pedi. The kit included both curved and straight guide strips, straight for toes and curved for fingers as they are smaller. Obviously. ;) Maybe even tape would work in place? Who knows! It's simple though, use an opaque white shade on your tips and once dry coat the entire nail with a sheer nude or pink one. One coat of the sheer tone will result in a "French" effect meaning more drastic white tips. but layering on a 2nd coat of the sheer tone will give you a very pretty "American" mani or pedi. Your call really, though I personally tend to prefer the more natural American look as shown.

Pedi: Sally Hansen French kit
Mani: China Glaze Red Pearl w/ Poshe top coat

The SheSpace Swatches

I will freely confess an obsession with loose eyeshadows. Upon hearing about The SheSpace/About Face cosmetics I knew that I had to try them. I despise paying shipping charges (despite these ones being VERY low) and had long ago asked Dan to stop into the Chicagoland shop to pick a few up. Being the incredibly sweet husband that he is he offered to drop by and grab them for me yesterday while on work travel! The prices are exceptionally reasonable too and with the quality of these eye pigments too, I'm blown away. A small sample size baggie is 50 cents and a jar (bit smaller than BE) is $4. The color selection will have you floored, guaranteed!

I wear loose shadows wet, always. But I've recently come to find that visine eye drops (or generic) work even better than water to make the shades exceptionally vibrant and long lasting. A little of these colors all go a LONG way. They blend and apply like nothing that I have ever used, they're completely amazing. If you have any questions I will do my very best to help out.

Pocketful of Twinkle is the TRUE silver that I have been forever hunting for, most go blue tinted on my skin, this is real silver. You Can Be Anything looks like hot cocoa to me and would be a gorgeous crease color for a more natural look. Fleeced by Faeries is a beautiful icy pale blue and Julia's Got the List is brilliant mulberry shade and reminds me a lot of Urban Decay's Last call (but prettier)! Beyond Skin Deep is a perfect shimmering nude and One Turkey Trotting has the same base with a bit more subtle multi-colored shimmer. A Girl Like Me is best described as a golden tan, another amazing neutral. I have yet to find a more perfect taupe shade than Double the Pleasure, it's smack dab in the middle of a gray and brown as all real taupes should be, I would consider this medium toned. Not too dark or light. Photos truly can't capture the beauty of these.

Parlez-Vous Français? Nails!

Up until about 6 months ago I had zero interest in doing my nails. I couldn't sit still long enough to not smudge, enter Poshe fast dry top coat. Nirvana :D This stuff dries 3 freaking coats in under 5 minutes, craziness, but happy craziness is the best kind! Mine began to thicken about 3 months in, so I added 1/2 a bottle of Revlon Colorstay top coat too (Dollar Tree find, 2/$1 shhhh!) and the result is the perfect fast dry chip resistant sealer.

So, anyway! OPI's new France collection for Fall had me feeling major "buy me" pangs deep within my soul. But seriously, at $8.50 a bottle that can be hard to justify for more than 1 bottles, right? I did though cave and picked up You Don't Know Jacques at Regis. It's a very unique Taupe with a touch more brown than a traditional gray. It wears exceptionally well, 3 days with no chips or peeling. Actually, I was on day 3 when I decided to paint the bathroom and fukked my mani all to hell by scratching wet paint from the edges of baseboards. ;)

So now I had a real problem. ;) I was desperate to also have both Louvre Me, Louvre Me Not and Parlez-Vous OPI also. Remembering though that Sally's beauty Supply had a Buy 2 Get 1 Free going on for China Glaze I decided to go check it out and see if I could find a replica of each color. Lo and behold, with my Sally Card each bottle was no longer $6, but $3.25! So I grabbed 3 bottles for a total of $6.50 in the shades VII, VII (both from the 10th anniversary collection) and Spontaneous. Spontaneous is a *very* close duplicate of Parlez-Vous and a tad less bright and bit more gray than photographed (see below). VII is also an excellent stand in for We'll Always Have Paris. VIII is a deeeep eggplant color and so gorgeous and very close to OPI's Lincoln Park at Midnight which I already own. Crap. The search continues for Lourve Me at a reasonable price!

One thing that has thus far shocked me is how INCREDIBLY well China Glaze both applies and wears for me when paired with Poshe topcoat. Of course my thoughts may differ depending on which color is being used, but so far these actually beat out some OPI shades in the quality realm.

Vintage Inspired FOTD (face of the day)

I am a touch obsessed with things from long ago, anything that conveys some form of whimsy in my eyes. retro and vintage looks from any era are prime examples. The women of our past are incredibly inspiring to me, classic and timeless beauty is perfection. Here is my tribute with a very wearable look. My hair was styled using pincurls, just wrap chunks of hair into flat circles using bobby pins to form and x holding the curl and hop into bed! Preferably you should cover your head in a smooth cloth to eliminate frizz.

Foundation: Sally Hansen Carmindy in Ecru Beige
Blush: NYX Dusty Rose
Eyes: NYX trio TS31 Copacabana
Liner: Smashbox creme liner in dark brown and slightly "winged"
Mascara: Lancome Fatale (perfection on my short, thin lashes)
Lipstick: NYX Sweet Prawn (less pink than shown)

The lips are a bit bold as they should be with this vintage look and have a more peachy quality that did not come through in the photos.

NYX Representative Kit & NYX Collection

Why oh why does my favorite brand have to be so difficult to get my hands on!? Well, I finally broke down and came to the conclusion that the best solution was to simply become a Rep for the company. Easy enough, right? Well it did take a few weeks. A few agonizing weeks! lol I can now get my hands on ANY item for you that NYX produces at 25% off of the retail price shown on the website. Check it out and let me know what you think! NYX Cosmetics.com I have yet to try anything that I didn't like, though the eyeshadow trios, lip glosses, lipsticks, tinted lip spas (LOVE LOVE), and blushes are my absolute favorites. The tester palettes were all part of my $60 kit, though I will note that the price has since been increased to $99 for approved applicants. Most all of the single products were purchased seperatley. Check it out....

Makeup Storage and Basics

Really... I guess it's pretty funny. Looking back anyways I am humored. My first foray into makeup was Bare Escentuals and while I convinced myself that it was great, primarily because everyone else did, the foundations were not a good choice for my dry and sensitive skin. I would grab a $12 BE (Bare Escentuals) eyeshadow on eBay or at Sephora now and then but still couldn't find myself having fun with makeup. That all changed as I expanded out to other brands like Everyday Minerals, Urban Decay, MAC, L'Oreal's HiP line and now NYX. What I have realized is that the fun comes in the form of accomplishment when things have applied well and look good with the rest of your features.

For that all that you need are a couple of semi-decent brushes and a beginner's knowledge of what each product can do for your skin. I can highly recommend many of CVS's EoB (Essence of beauty) brushes and they are cheap, often going on sale too! Another staple that you will need for fun eyeshadow looks will be a primer for your lids. Without primer your eyeshadows will not adhere as they should. I can highly reccommend UD (Urban Decay) Primer Potion, L'Oreal HiP paint in a shade to match your skin tone (I am pretty fair and use "Secretive", the lightest) and also CVS's Lumene eyeshadow primer. In all honesty, that is the only "specialty" item that you will need for success!

Have a little fun with the darker and bolder colors for Fall! Amazingly, there are only TWO of these shades that do not work for my skin at all, Nutmeg and Gold. Ask for color recommendations!
